A Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) is 'a person currently enrolled at a University to undertake nursing study, who is registered with AHPRA as a student nurse, and who at commencement, has successfully completed not less than 12 months of the Bachelor of Nursing Degree or 18 months of a Double Degree /Paramedicine’
Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) Enterprise Agreement 2016-2020 (Clause 106)

RUSONs work under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse. They (RUSONs) work within a core duties and exclusion list, (this is very different in scope to a nursing student placement) and the RUSON works above Safe Patient Care ratios.

The RUSON is employed on a fixed term basis at a minimum of 8 hours per week. Employment ceases upon registration as a Registered Nurse, or if the student withdraws, defers, or fails their undergraduate degree. As the student role continues, RUSONs may require leave from work during clinical placements.

The role of the RUSON:

  • Creates an additional career pathway for undergraduate nurses
  • Enables fundamental skill development and earlier transition into healthcare teams
  • RUSON period of service continues into the Transition Year (pending successful selection)
  • Paid position
  • Gives additional clinical exposure in acute environments
