A Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) is 'a person currently enrolled at a University to undertake nursing study, who is registered with AHPRA as a student nurse, and who at commencement, has successfully completed not less than 12 months of the Bachelor of Nursing Degree or 18 months of a Double Degree /Paramedicine’

RUSONs work under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse. They (RUSONs) work within a core duties and exclusion list, (this is very different in scope to a nursing student placement) and the RUSON works above Safe Patient Care ratios.
The RUSON is employed on a fixed term basis at a minimum of 8 hours per week. Employment ceases upon registration as a Registered Nurse, or if the student withdraws, defers, or fails their undergraduate degree. As the student role continues, RUSONs may require leave from work during clinical placements.

- Creates an additional career pathway for undergraduate nurses
- Enables fundamental skill development and earlier transition into healthcare teams
- RUSON period of service continues into the Transition Year (pending successful selection)
- Paid position
- Gives additional clinical exposure in acute environments
