The Mental Health Team at Grampians Health Ballarat includes a base of consultants, who have a lived experience of mental illness and are available for patients as supports on their journey to recovery.

A secondary function of the consultants is to listen to peoples' experiences and opinions regarding receiving services and make recommendations to enable improved service delivery.

Who we care for?

Consumer and Carer Consultants work with, and advocate for, people across all age ranges.

Post Discharge Peer Support Workers engage with and support people in the first 4 weeks of discharge from the Adult Acute Unit and the family/carers of those people.

Consumer and Carer Consultants

Consumer/Carer Consultants facilitate Advisory Groups, allowing people who use the service and their family members to have a say in how services are delivered. This information is then fed back to the appropriate meeting or committees within the service to motivate change and improve service delivery.

Consumer/Carer Consultants also work with staff to build improved capacity to work using person-centred and family-inclusive practice.

Peer Workers

Our Post Discharge Peer Support workers work directly with people recently discharged from the adult acute unit and their families.

We work with people and/or the family members of those people in the first month of discharge from the Adult Acute Unit.

Peer support workers are employed because of their lived experience of recovery and their value to those they work with is in using their experience to support self-directed recovery.
