MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses a strong magnet and radiofrequency energy to produce images in any plane through the body. MRI pictures show the soft tissues of the body, muscles, nerves, brain, discs, ligaments and cartilage.

During the scan, you will by lying inside the tunnel of the scanner. The MRI will make some loud tapping noises during the exam so earplugs or headphones can be provided. Music can also be provided during the scan, if you wish.

What to expect?

You will need to complete a Safety Questionnaire prior to your MRI scan. This information will enable us to assess whether or not we can safely go ahead with your MRI. Some implants and devices may react adversely to the scanning process and may degrade acquired images.  Please ensure accurate answers are given to the questions in the Safety Questionnaire.  

If contrast is required to assist with the MRI scan, we may require you to have a blood test at least two days prior to your appointment. Our staff will advise you if this is needed.

Some MRI scans may require you to fast, again our staff will let you know when making your appointment.

Before your scan, you must remove all metal objects in your possession or on your person. This includes watches, mobile phones, credit cards, coins, keys, body piercings, ear rings, hair clips, hair extensions, hearing aids, removable dentures, jewellery, eyeliner, calliper, corsets or artificial limbs.

What does an MRI cost?

Ballarat Health Services MRI is a non-Medicare funded service; therefore, fees cannot be reimbursed by Medicare Australia.

We have endeavored to ensure that our fees are as low as feasible, ranging from $240 up to $580.
Our staff can give you an estimate of costs at the time of making your appointment.

Why is there an out-of-pocket cost?

Our MRI machine is a non-Medicare funded service: therefore fees cannot be reimbursed by Medicare Australia and payment is required on the day of service.

Can I make a booking over the phone?

We are unable to book an appointment without receiving a copy of the referral first.  Our team of Radiologists need to sight the referral to assess whether or not contrast is required and if this is the scan that is needed.

Once approved by our Radiologists, the MRI appointment can be made. 

I have a referral for another imaging provider, can I have my test at BHS Radiology?

Yes, we accept all referrals/requests.

Where do I find MRI?

MRI is within the Radiology Department, which is located behind the Emergency Department closest to the Mair Street entrance of Ballarat Health Services.

Is there a drop-off area and what parking is there available?

Yes, there is a drop-off and pick-up zone available within the multi-storey car park (there is no fee for drivers using the drop-off zone and staying less than 30 minutes).

How long does it take for my results to come through?

Please allow up to 2 working days for non-urgent results to be sent to your referring doctor, we are unable to give your results to you directly.
