Hospital in the Home is a dedicated team of nursing staff who provide healthcare to patients in their home as an alternative to being admitted into a hospital bed.

What do we do?

Hospital in the Home (HITH) service is an alternative to hospital admission and provides the monitoring, intravenous therapy, medications, wound care and information that is received when admitted to hospital.

HITH provides care for most medical specialties, including post-surgery, medical admission for acute infections, coagulopathy or heart failure stabilisation, neurology, vascular, cardiology, orthopaedics, oncology and dialysis.

We look after all age groups, including midwifery and paediatrics.

How can you access this service?

Hospital in the Home (HITH) service follows the same rules as an inpatient stay in a hospital bed.

Patients are referred to HITH by a doctor at Ballarat Health Service (BHS).

Alternatively, Ballarat Health Services' nursing can be ‘hired’ or contracted by a major Melbourne Hospital (Tertiary Hospital) to visit you at home.

Who is eligible?

To assess eligibility for our service you will need to be seen by a HITH nurse and doctor, who will assess the safety and suitability of meeting your care needs in the community. If care in your home is not suitable, you can receive care in one of our HITH clinic rooms.

You will also be asked to come into our clinic rooms once a week for a medical review, or if your nurse or doctor has concerns about you.
