Cardiac Rehabilitation is an eight week program that assists patients with cardiac conditions to return to an active and healthy life. It also provides education to reduce the likelihood of a further cardiac event.

What do we do?

Cardiac Rehabilitation is an 8 week program that assists people with heart conditions to recover and get back to normal activities sooner. It also provides you with information to reduce the chance of a further event.

The program focuses on:

  • learning more about your heart condition and treatment
  • getting back to your usual activities (e.g. work, driving)
  • changing your lifestyle to improve your heart health
  • managing your medicines
  • stopping smoking
  • knowing warning signs and what to do in an emergency.

Who do we care for?

People who have had:

  • a heart attack
  • bypass or stent surgery
  • stable or unstable angina
  • controlled heart failure
  • valve replacement surgery
  • other vascular or heart disease.

What can you expect?

You will have an assessment to talk about any health concerns and to modify the program to your needs.

The program lasts for 8 weeks and includes 2 exercise and 1 education session each week. 

The education assists you to learn more about your condition and how to manage it.

Over the course of the 8 week program patients may be seen by:

  • Cardiac Nurse
  • Physiotherapist
  • Exercise Physiologist
  • Dietitian
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Pharmacist
  • Psychologist
  • Allied Health Assistant

Following the 8 weeks you will be encouraged to continue with your own exercise program or you may be referred to a suitable community exercise program.

How can you access this service?

You will need a referral.

This can come from any medical staff such as your cardiologist or GP. Others who can refer you include nurses and Allied Health Staff such as Physiotherapists.

After the referral is received, you will be contacted by our staff for an appointment.

There is no cost for this service.
