Vale Christopher Duncan

14 June 1953 - 3 April 2025 Respected colleague, loyal leader, and cherished friend
We are saddened to share the passing of Chris Duncan earlier this year, a much-loved and long-serving member of the Grampians Health family, whose legacy spans four decades of dedicated service, deep knowledge, and quiet leadership.
Chris began his career at Ballarat Base Hospital in 1973, originally assisting in the Central Sterile Supply Department. Over the years, he worked across many areas including switchboard, the emergency department, stores, and the mailroom. Eventually, he found his place in the operating theatres, where he flourished, becoming Manager of Theatre Technicians and Orderlies – a role in which he led with integrity, compassion, and unwavering professionalism.
Chris was deeply respected by everyone, from technicians and porters to surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and hospital leadership. He had a reputation for being fair, calm, organised, and incredibly knowledgeable. He prioritised patient care and surgical safety above all else, and his passion for high standards and education made him a natural mentor to many.
But it wasn’t just Chris’s expertise that left a mark – it was his humanity. He was a storyteller with a sharp wit, a warm sense of humour, and a unique ability to bring people together. He never forgot a birthday (they were all logged in his diary), made sure everyone took their breaks (often bringing extra food in case someone forgot), and could always be counted on to provide a helpful reminder about daylight savings, solstices, or a staff celebration.
In 2011, Chris was diagnosed with bowel cancer following knee replacement surgery and stepped back from his role. Though given a prognosis of just two to three years, Chris faced the diagnosis with remarkable resilience, living another 14 years with the support of Grampians Health clinical trial, VENGEANCE, a treatment targeting his metastatic cancer. Chris was on this trial for over three years and continued participating in experimental treatments for his cancer in the following 11 years - a testament to his belief in the power of research and innovation to improve lives.
Chris became not only a patient but an advocate for research, helping others understand the value of clinical trials and sharing his journey to encourage others. His advocacy was featured in the 2023 Grampians Health Clinical Trials booklet. Grampians Health is incredibly grateful for Chris’s strength, generosity, and unwavering belief in the importance of research.
Chris remained a familiar face and beloved friend to many during his illness. He continued to prioritise health and routine, still walking and weight training until he physically couldn’t. Chris was known for running laps of Lake Wendouree at lunchtime, knees strapped and determination unwavering. He loved weekends at Ocean Grove, was a proud Melbourne Football Club supporter, and had a weakness for high thread count linen, quality food, and a tough crossword (often three at once). He also adored his family, especially his niece Belinda, and great-nephews, who were a central part of his world and cared for him lovingly during his later years.
Chris was a quiet achiever with a big presence – someone who led with empathy, who valued people, and who made work better simply by being there. His contribution to Grampians Health is immeasurable, and the respect and affection held for him by his colleagues endures. We thank Chris for his 40 years of service, for his humour, his care, and his example. He will be deeply missed.
