The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour galloped into Ballarat, with Michelle Payne and two Melbourne Cup-winning horses, Prince of Penzance and Almandin, accompanying the iconic trophy on a special visit to the Ballarat Base Hospital on Thursday, 16 October.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour to Ballarat acknowledged the region’s contribution to Australian racing, marking 10 years since Ballarat-trained Prince of Penzance won the 2015 Melbourne Cup under jockey Michelle Payne.

The event gave patients, staff and volunteers the opportunity to meet Michelle Payne and to view the iconic trophy with representatives from the Victoria Racing Club and Ballarat Turf Club.

Peter Downs, Chief Executive Officer of the Ballarat Turf Club, said the community was pleased to be part of the tour.

"We were absolutely thrilled to welcome the Melbourne Cup Tour to Ballarat. The Cup holds a special place in the heart of our community, and it's a privilege to celebrate its legacy through school visits, a hospital stop, and a unique charity fundraiser that will see shares in racehorses auctioned off to support a great local cause.

“This year marks a decade since Ballarat-trained Prince of Penzance stunned the nation with a historic Melbourne Cup win at 100-1 odds, ridden by our very own Michelle Payne—the first woman to ever win the Cup. To have both Michelle and Prince of Penzance play a central role in this tour is incredibly meaningful.

“The Melbourne Cup is more than just a race—it’s a symbol of Australian sporting spirit, and Ballarat has proudly contributed to its story. We’re also excited to officially launch the 2025 Ballarat Cup, which will be run on Saturday, December 6. It promises to be a spectacular day of racing and celebration for our region."

Victoria Racing Club Chief Executive Officer Kylie Rogers said the tour continues to strengthen community engagement with the Cup.

"The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour is one of the most significant ways we can share the excitement and legacy of the Lexus Melbourne Cup with communities across Australia and beyond.

“We’re also proud of how the Cup continues to reach and inspire the next generation – through visits to schools and engagement with young Australians, we’re ensuring the story and spirit of the Melbourne Cup lives on for years to come.”

Grampians Health Chief People Officer Claire Woods said the visit was appreciated by patients and staff.

“At Grampians Health, we value opportunities that connect our patients and staff with the wider community. The Melbourne Cup Tour is a wonderful example of how local partnerships and shared experiences can lift spirits and bring joy into our hospital environment. It’s these community connections that make a real difference to the people we care for every day.”
