Grampians Health conducts wellbeing sessions for volunteers

Wednesday 28 May 2025

As a token of gratitude to our volunteers, Grampians Health Ballarat conducted an introductory Wellbeing and Support Session to celebrate the incredible individuals who give so much to our health service and the wider Ballarat community.

The Wellbeing and Support Sessions were designed to connect volunteers from across all of Grampians Health volunteer programs across Ballarat, offering them a chance to step outside their usual roles and take the time to focus on their own wellbeing. The initiative fosters a further sense of community, promotes self-care, and provides tools that support mental, emotional, and physical health.

“We wanted to create something meaningful for our volunteer team that acknowledges the incredible work they do, their selfless contribution, while also providing them the time and space to focus on themselves as individuals” said Leah Ferguson, Manager of Volunteer Services at Grampians Health Ballarat. “These sessions are about connection, reflection, and reminding our volunteers that it is vital they prioritise their wellbeing and selfcare continuously to equip them in their role.”

The session was held on Monday, 19 May, from 10:30am to 12:00pm, and was facilitated by Grampians Health volunteer Luba Bradford. It included a rich mix of activities including Tai Chi, seated meditation, music and storytelling, group discussion, self-care cards, Taoist walking, and active listening skills.

The initiative was held as part of National Volunteer Week, which is held annually to celebrate and recognise the vital support that millions of volunteers provide to their communities.

As part of celebrations, Grampians Health held events across all campuses to thank volunteers. A morning tea was also held at Grampians Health Ballarat on 20 May, Tuesday with Grampians Health Board Chair Hon Rob Knowles addressing the attendees.

Our volunteers enhance the experience for patients and their families by offering support, compassion and assistance when they visit our health service. From walking patients to appointments, assisting them during their time in the emergency department, making them a cuppa in the BRICC Wellness Centre or spending time with them on the wards (just to name a few), our volunteers provide a presence that is reassuring and comforting.

“Our volunteers are the heart of Grampians Health,” said Claire Woods, Chief People Officer. “They bring compassion, energy, and dedication to everything they do. These sessions are a way for us to give back—to show our appreciation and to encourage them to prioritise their own wellbeing. Their contribution is not only deeply valued but essential to the care we provide across the region.”
