About the Program

Grampians Health Ballarat pharmacy internship program is structured to provide interns with a wealth of learning opportunities to achieve their goal of becoming a registered pharmacist.

The program is designed to promote the highest level of clinical knowledge, dispensing and manufacturing accuracy and support for the transition from intern to registered pharmacist.

Grampians Health Ballarat Pharmacy Department is a credentialed training site for both the Monash Intern Foundation Program (IFP) and the SHPA Residency Program.

In addition, the Department offers access to:

  • More than 30 pharmacists with a diverse range of clinical backgrounds and specialties
  • A relaxed and friendly supported working environment
  • Regular CPD sessions throughout the hospital and within the Pharmacy Department including fortnightly journal club
  • Opportunities to attend professional seminars and conferences

Tutorials and Training

Pharmacy interns will have access to weekly tutorials from Grampians Health Ballarat pharmacists, covering disease states, primary health care, drug classes and exam preparation.

Rotations

Interns spend time working in all areas of the Grampians Health Ballarat Pharmacy Department including:

  • General clinical rotations (3-4 weeks): general medicine with insight into Partnered Pharmacist Medication Charting (PPMC) processes, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, ENT, oncology, rehabilitation, geriatric ward, and palliative care.
  • Specialty clinical rotations (2-3 weeks): Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, paediatrics, mental health.
  • Cardiology ambulatory clinic
  • Inpatient, outpatient and oncology (Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre) dispensaries
  • Extemporaneous and aseptic manufacturing
  • Medication Safety, Antimicrobial Stewardship & Hospital Admissions Risk Program (HARP)
  • Clinical trials

The Grampians Regional Intern will be based primarily at Grampians Health Ballarat, and will complete a regional rotation of approximately 12 weeks (split into 2 to 6 week blocks throughout the year) to Grampians Regional health service sites, for a collaborative training experience in regional and rural hospital and pharmacy.

Individual feedback and goal setting sessions follow each rotation to encourage the intern to progress their
learning, encourage self-reflection on practice and plan for continuing professional development opportunities.

  • Clinical Pharmacy Services
  • Pharmacist-led Ambulatory Care Clinics
  • Dispensary Services (including manufacturing, clinical trials)
  • Outreach and Clinical Trials Pharmacy Service
  • Ballarat Regional Integrated Cancer Centre (BRICC) Oncology Pharmacy
  • Quality Use of Medicines, encompassing Medication Safety and Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Research

Monash Intern Foundation Program (IFP)

The Grampians Health Ballarat Pharmacy Department is a credentialed training site for the Monash Intern Foundation Program (IFP), and can support you to complete the IFP in conjunction with your Intern Training Program to graduate at the end of your intern year with either a Graduate Certificate of Pharmacy Practice or Master of Pharmacy (Monash University BPharm undergraduates only).
