Public health is the work of promoting good health at a population level by protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. Public health practitioners work with all who seek to protect and improve the health of our community and to manage risks to health that are beyond an individual's capacity to control.
This work involves promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to communicable diseases. Public Health practitioners need to be particularly mindful of community members who may require additional resources and support in order to stay healthy. This is done by considering not just the physical determinants of health, but considering and addressing the social determinants of health that can lead to disadvantage and poorer health outcomes for some people.

About Grampians Public Health Unit (GPHU)

The Grampians Public Health Unit (GPHU) has been established to strengthen the public health response to communicable diseases and other health issues. The unit is part of a new system of devolved public health units across Victoria, to provide a new state-wide system of public health delivery and oversight.

The GPHU is hosted by Ballarat Health Services (BHS). Clinical Director Associate Professor Rosemary Aldrich and Operations Director Robyn Wilson together with the GPHU team members work in partnership with health services and other agencies throughout the Grampians region. Four key programs so far sit within the GPHU: COVID-19 Case Contact Outbreak Management (CCOM), COVID-19 Rapid Response Testing Team (RRTT), the Grampians COVID-19 vaccination program, and Ballarat for Kids.

Initially, GPHU will be responsible for COVID-19 related activities - the COVID-19 vaccination program and case, contact and outbreak management in tight collaboration with the Department of Health (DH). However, as COVID demands decline, it is envisaged that the GPHU will assume a key role in activities regarding the prevention and population management of a range of communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases and conditions in the cluster, lead a regional approach to health protection, strengthen population health strategy and outcomes (including regarding social and structural determinants of health and health inequalities), and undertake population health research.

Within the Grampians region a number of key organisations are working together to achieve a strategic and supportive approach to COVID-19 contact tracing and vaccination rollout. These include:

  • Ballarat Health Services
  • Beaufort & Skipton Health Services
  • Ballan District Health and Care
